My Favorite Podcasts To Listen To While Quarantining

I have not always been a fan of podcasts. For various reasons, it was inconceivable to me that people would actually spend minutes and hours listening to other people talk. Don’t get me wrong, I can be a great listener when I am involved in the conversation.

My short attention span made it difficult for me to focus even though it was not an issue when it came to books or articles. In fact, I am that person that used to proudly boast (and maybe still do a little bit) about her “I am more of a reader” club membership until I realized what I have been missing on. One day, I stumbled by chance on the Jesus and Jollof podcast by Luvvie Ajayi and Yvone Orji, two amazing and successful American Nigerian women who led me into their world and made me part of theirs while talking about all the things they love, their stories, and life in general. Listening to them piqued my curiosity and have definitely turned me into a “podcasts hunter”. During this time of social isolation that we are all going through, podcasts have played a great part in my “self-care” routine as I don’t always have the energy to connect virtually with people. From dating to true crime to money management, check out some of my favorites!

RELATIONSHIPS AND COMEDY

  • Why Won’t You Date Me? is a FUN podcast hosted by Nicole Byer and a guest comedically exploring why she is single, while discussing topics related to love, life, and sex. Some of my favorite episodes are: Having Tandem Sex, Why Everybody Needs Therapy and What it’s Like to Finally Date a Good Guy. Listen now on Spotify or on Apple Podcasts.
  • XoNecole’s Happy Hour hosts are like your homegirls in your head with whom you can have unfiltered discussions on life, love, sex, personal/professional growth and everything in between. Get ready to laugh and have fun!
  • Bad Brown Aunties is hosted by two queer brown immigrants Rage Kidvai & Thanu Yakupitiyage. Bad Brown Aunties talks about art, culture, politics, and legacy through the lens of the amazing and creative people of color. Kidvai and Yakupitiyage’s podcast is interview-focused, and they use it to amplify the voices of people of color, specifically those who work in white-dominated industries. They celebrate existing aunties (not the gossipy ones), and are figuring out how to become aunties to a new generation. You can listen to the first season on Spotify or Apple Podcasts .

CRIME

  • Murder Squad: If you are a true crime lover like me, you will enjoy this podcast with retired Cold Case Investigator Paul Holes and investigative journalist Billy Jensen who dig into cold cases in real time. Fun fact: In January 2020, the podcast helped lead to the arrest of James Curtis Clanton, a former Colorado resident who is now a suspect in the 1980 killing of 21-year-old Helene Pruszynski, thanks to a listener. Listen now on Apple Podcasts.
  • The Serial Podcast was recommended to me by my friend Vivienne and I am becoming a big fan! Drama, amazing storytelling skills. Each season explores a nonfictional story in weekly installments.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

I love everything related to money management, investing and wealth creation. Some of my favorites are the followings:

  • The Suze Orman’s Women and Money where I can get insights and actionable advice on investing, saving and life.
  • The Clever Girls Know, a financial education platform that empowers women (and men) to ditch debt, save money and build real wealth.
  • The Journey To Launch – Personal finance by Jasmine Souffrant who helps people gain clarity around their finances and create an actionnable plan to reach their goals.
  • The His and Her Money Show, a podcast about money management and marriage.
  • The weekly Brown Ambition podcast about juggling life, career, and building wealth with Mandi Woodruff, executive editor of MagnifyMoney.com and former personal finance reporter for Yahoo Finance, and Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, an award-winning financial educator and best-selling author.

MENTAL/PHYSICAL WELLBEING AND SPIRITUALITY

  • The Therapy for Black Girls with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford is a weekly chat about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.
  • Life with the Lindseys is a fun, interactive and conversational podcast. I love listening to Heather and Cornelius talk about real life issues with their positive and wholesome perspective.
  • I love the Random Wellness Podcast with Nicole VanQuaethem, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. She shares helpful tips, real stories and honest conversations about nutrition, natural living, movement, and everything in-between to help you uplevel your health, life and mindset! My recent favorite episode is episode 19 on the hustle and anti-hustle movement.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Bossed up is the perfect podcast to listen to if you are looking for research-driven, relatable advice to craft your career and life like a boss!
  • HOW TO FAIL is perfect for people like me who may have struggled for a long time with the concept of failure (and still struggles sometimes). This podcast by Elizabeth Day is a breath of fresh air. She talks to people who seem to have it all together but who actually did not always have it together. They share the times they fell down and how they got back up again in honest and refreshing stories. Listen on Spotify or on Apple Podcasts.
  • Jase avec Moi by the amazing Michaella Mutoni is a bilingual podcast (french and english) highlighting the lives and stories of young African professionals who shares their experience climbing the corporate ladder, starting and running their own businesses, and thriving in whatever environment they live in. You can listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

What do you think of this list? Do you have any recommendations to share with me? If yes, please do so I can listen to them and share them with everyone else!
